Someone To Share It With: Revisiting Mahogany at 50 Years

Inspired by their collaboration with @mahoganyat50, Qiaira Riley (@thegoodhoodwitch) and Yannick Lowery (@severe.paper) of Every Blue Moon present Someone To Share It With: Revisiting Mahogany at 50 Years, an exhibition traversing through themes of success, romance, and justice in Black urban spatialities as explored in the 1975 film. Join us on Friday, March 6th for the opening  reception featuring a curated playlist of 70's music.

Artist Statement:

In the Summer of 2025, artist collective Every Blue Moon was invited to Chicago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1975 film Mahogany, starring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams. Although I’ve always been a fan of the film for its cast and impeccable fashion, it wasn’t until I was a bit older that I realized how problematic it was. I soon discovered many of these conservative ideas, particularly around relationships, are still very much relevant in current media. Watching the YouTube game show sensation, Pop the Balloon or Find Love, I draw comparisons and ask questions about contemporary love through review and revision of the film. My half of Someone to Share it With explores these dynamics and parallels within my own personal experiences.
