Constructed (along with others on the block) in 1900 for developer William S. Kimball. 

On May 3, 1899, the Philadelphia Construction Chronicle reported: "Owner and builder William S. Kimball will begin at once to put up four three-story and mansard-roof dwellings at Nos. 4220 to 4226 Spruce Street, at a cost of $33,000."

Sold to Levi L Rue

Rue was a noted financier and banker, eventually rising to lead the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank. His obituary in The New York Times described him as a man who was deeply respected in financial circles.

First major renovation was executed by William Steele & Sons Co., a firm renowned for their construction of iconic buildings in Philadelphia. Steele’s firm is particularly beloved by native Philadelphians for having built Connie Mack Stadium, a legendary venue in the city's sports history.

Sold to the Philomusian Club, a social club that started as a women’s club promoting the arts in Philadelphia.

Purchased by the University City Arts League for $25,000 with the help of Dr James Cox and Frank Betts. The house featured two large meeting rooms on the first and second floors (later transformed into an art gallery and dance studio), apartments on the 3rd and 4th floors which have since been converted into classrooms, a formidable cellar holding remnants of a clubhouse dining-room which was turned into a ceramic studio, several fireplaces, etched-glass windows and an abundance of untouched, turn-of-the century oak woodwork and paneling, tiled bathrooms and many quirky closets. The mysterious mansion had previously served as a meeting place for the International Order of Odd Fellows. "When we took over the building," Michael Kuncevich remembers, "We found a lectern and a throne-like chair. And a skeleton - part of their secret Odd Fellows rituals - literally in a closet! Somehow, we sold all that leftover furniture."
