Dive Into Natural Dyes
SUMMER 2: JULY 14 - AUGUST 31
Dates: 8/16, 8/23
Time: 2 PM - 4 PM
Class Description:
Attend one or both sessions of this two-part workshop series to dive into the world of plant-based textile dyes!
Part 1 (8/16): Fabric Preparation
In the first week, we will prepare our fabric for dyeing with samples of two mordant treatments, which are used to produce richer and longer-lasting colors in your fabric. We will cover both traditional alum mordanting and a kitchen-safe treatment with soy beans. Participants in this session will also be encouraged to experiment with fabric resists and folding techniques to produce variegated results on your final cloth!
Part 2 (8/23): Dye Day!
In week two, we will create three natural dye vats from locally foraged and kitchen-sourced materials and dye our mordanted fabrics! Part two of the workshop can be attended as a stand-alone session – there will be extra mordanted fabric available or participants are welcome to bring items and garments from home.
This class is beginner friendly and open to all ages (families and kids welcome)
Students may wish to bring their own materials to dye. Linens or garments from home should be 100% natural fibers (cotton, linen, silk, wool) and should be scoured before the workshop per emailed instructions.
NOTE: THERE IS A ONE-TIME $25 MATERIALS FEE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS WORKSHOP. PLEASE SELECT THE ADD-ON BELOW. IF YOU ARE ATTENDING BOTH DATES, ONLY ONE PAYMENT IS REQUIRED.
Teacher Info:
Cecilia McKinnon is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from California and New Mexico, currently living and working in Philadelphia. McKinnon’s work explores entropy, time, precarious landscapes, and ‘natural’ histories. Her work draws on found and salvaged materials, and takes form as dyed and quilted textiles, biodegradable cast objects, moving images, and creative writing. She holds a Master of Fine Art in Fibers + Material Practices from Concordia University in Montréal, and a BFA from the University of New Mexico.
