Intro to Creative Portrait Photography (Summer)

Class Description:

NOTE: Participants will need to bring their own camera. Any digital camera will do, as long as it has an M for manual mode.

The class will cover how to engage an audience through storytelling. How to express oneself through utilizing words in poetry form for the development of song, rap, or spoken word. The workshop is for anyone looking to explore how to translate their feelings into literary pieces of art focused on fluidity. I will teach the students how to remove barriers of shame, how to focus on the emotions that they want top bring to life in their words, how to grab the audience's attention and have intense moments of emphasis in the emotions that are being expressed through the writings. How to separate themselves while performing, and train them on how to compartmentalize the emotions to have a flawless performance. How to perform personal writings in public forums. The students will have a chance to perform their literary art at the end of the program.

Mike VanHelder is a Philadelphia-based photographer with over 20 years of experience in a variety of styles. He shoots mostly pictures of people, including sometimes the animal kinds. He is most interested in creating art that exists at the intersection of the beautiful and the grotesque. Mike is queer, trans-affirming, and unapologetically goth.
