Intro to Needle Felting (Spring 1)

Class Description:

Students will learn how to use felting needles to condense wool fibers into soft-sculptures. This workshop will cover the basics of needle felting, understanding barbed needles, angling, troubleshooting, and exploring additive and subtractive techniques. By the end of the 6 weeks, students will walk away with their own soft-sculptures made of wool.

NOTE: This class includes a $25 Materials Fee

Teacher Info:

Ally Messer is an interdisciplinary maker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By working in slow, repetitive processes such as stop-motion animation, needle-felting, and paper mache, Messer prioritizes a mindful connection to the present moment and world around her. As an educator, she is passionate about growing accessibility to arts education; looking to the classroom as a safe space for vulnerability, resource-sharing, and community building. Messer holds a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Nevada, Reno and an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture.

Her most recent body of work highlights instances of care and reciprocity in communities of species-not-our-own; with the hope that humans may learn from the entangled world how to better support one another in this time of ecological crisis.
