Working from live models is a practice which is essential for any artist interested in working with the figure. Gaining experience and confidence in drawing from life provides a foundation of deep looking and presence with the subject that is key to the figurative artist.
This class will explore broad techniques of drawing from the live model, using a variety of media to explore composition and basic anatomy of the human figure. We will use pencil, charcoal, and ink to explore different types of mark-making and modes of personal expression.
This class aims to help the student in gaining confidence in drawing the figure from life, a basic understanding of anatomy, and a zest for experimenting with perspective.
NOTE: THERE IS A $50 LIVE MODEL FEE FOR THIS CLASS. PLEASE SELECT THE ADD-ON BELOW.
Teacher Info:
My practice draws heavily on the experience of observing the people, interiors, and landscapes that I find around me. The task of transfiguring my perceptions of the world into oil is deeply rewarding to me, and I see myself as a painter-translator, rendering the ineffable qualities of my life around me into paint and pencil. When I work from life, I am concerned not just with my motif, but with the way all of the paint fits together as a puzzle. It almost takes on a life of its own, the paint as a mud on the surface. It is this balancing act, between faithfully rendering the motif and considering the paint beyond just the image, which motivates my continued working from observation. It is practicing pure presence with my subject.
